Kindly refer to the permission form for details of the times, dates and locations for your child’s classes.

Warm Thanks to the parents who took the time to join our Talk with Vice-Provost and Professor of Literature, Cindy Weinstein, from California Institute of Technology (CalTech)! Prof. Weinstein’s first remark upon entering Anchor Point was how similar it was to CalTech – both having small, “boutique” environments geared to a niche group. Our students were surprised to learn that CalTech was the home to the Einstein Papers Project and that it manages NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. They were inspired by how such a small university with a student enrollment of just over 2,200 (compared to UBC with about 50,000), can wield so much influence in the field of science and technology. They also learned that science is very much a creative journey not dissimilar from the Arts. Our students came away inspired to learn more about science, space and technology as well as literature!

NORTH CREEK

Happy New Year and welcome back! It’s been an exciting first week! We can already see new friendships being formed, familiar faces reuniting, and a keen interest in new experiences all around.

As you know, some of the kindergarten students from Mole Hill and North Creek are now at Anchor Point. It became evident on the first day back from break that it would be beneficial to have familiar teachers to help with this transition. Ms. Candice, having worked with students from both, North Creek and Mole Hill over the summer, volunteered to be that transition person: She will be there for some of the morning and afternoon classes. Ms. Lili, who works as Mandarin teacher with students at all campuses is also at Anchor Point in the morning to greet the students on the street.

The rest of the Mole Hill staff, Ms. Julia, Ms. Priscilla and Ms. Yukimi have already begun working closely with Ms. Lindsay, Ms. Kelly, and Ms. Mahrukh. We are are consolidating as one community! It is heartwarming to see new friendships being formed with children enjoying getting to know new peers and new teachers.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions about the transition!

Oral Hygiene: For all Extended-Day children, please bring a rinsing cup, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss to use for brushing after lunch.

Emergency Consent Cards: If your child is a new student at North Creek Montessori, please fill in the Emergency Consent Card that you will receive from a teacher at the door. It is important that you complete it and return to school ASAP.

Community Update for Week Ending December 19, 2014

The School is Closed for Winter Holidays.  We look forward to seeing all of you back in the New Year on Tuesday, January 6!

Dear Families,

Another year has flown by, and not without a bushel full of changes! On behalf of the the staff and administration at our Lions Gate Montessori Community Schools, I’d like to extend our deepest thanks to the warm welcomes received by new staff from families. I would also like to thank you for your kind patience with our transitions, including the upcoming merge of Mole Hill into North Creek.

According to Dr. Montessori, adaptation (from Latin adaptare, “to fit”) is one of the key goals of human development. She suggests that to be a fully formed person, one must seek out what it means to “fit in” and to be comfortable in one’s own skin. This includes learning how to adapt to the changes we face in our lives from the ebbs and flows of feelings and the moment-to-moment shifts in thoughts, to larger changes in life circumstances.  She wrote, “The great power of man is that he adapts to every part of the environment and that he modifies it…while developing himself he unconsciously develops his own adaptation of his environment.” (Meaning of Adaptation, p.5)

So, as we transition from one year to another, and from one place to another, I’d like to leave you with the moving words of Lord Alfred Tennyson, England’s Poet Laureate during Queen Victoria’s reign:

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

On behalf of all the staff, I send you best wishes for a safe and cheerful holiday, and a very Happy New Year!

– Ms. Riza Weinstein, Head of Pedagogy
